Question mark over when direct Southampton flights will REALLY begin

2 min read

Direct flights to Southampton from Alderney will not resume until virus testing facilities are established at Alderney’s Airport, Aurigny’s spokeswoman has said.

Flights to and from Southampton were suspended when travel restrictions were mounted to halt the spread of Covid-19.

But the progress through the the States of Guernsey’s Exit from Lockdown framework, which has already seen isolation requirements from Group B countries reduce in Guernsey from 14 to seven days, has seen more people making the trip from Southampton into Guernsey.

From September 3rd the reduced isolation requirement, with testing on day seven of isolation, followed by passive surveillance if it comes back negative, will extend to Alderney as well.

Now the States of Guernsey are installing the infrastructure to enable Covid 19 testing on arrival at Guernsey airport and harbour – which would see the requirement for isolation further reduced to just a day or so.

No date has been set yet for the commencement of that stage – Phase 5C.

The easedown has seen an increase in people wishing to travel to and from Alderney and the UK and an impatience for Aurigny to reintroduce direct flights to Southampton.

Flights from Alderney to Southampton initially appeared in Aurigny’s schedule in mid September.

However they recently came up in its online timetable as starting up again from 5th October.

When AYNEWS asked Aurigny’s public relations department about the shift, she revealed that no firm date had yet been set for when they would start.

‘Unfortunately as there is no Border Control testing at Alderney airport and [because] we are not sure when this facility will be available there and if it will be, we are unable to offer direct services between Alderney and the UK under 5C.’

James Dent, chairman of the Policy and Finance Committee, poured cold water on the claim.

He said arrangements were already being made for testing at the airport for when it should be required.

‘Firstly no date has been set for Phase 5C, secondly no decisions on how those regulations will be applied to Alderney have yet been made and thirdly arrangements are being made on those facilities will be provided in Alderney as and when there is a need for them.’
