Emotional send off for long-serving GP

1 min read

Around 100 people gathered at the Val car park last week to give an emotional send off to long serving Alderney GP, Dr Jonathan Cooper.

Dr Cooper has left the practice after 26 years at Island Medical Centre, and his duties have included serving as the RNLI doctor and carrying out minor surgeries.

Barbara Benfield organised the surprise send off, circulating an email asking residents to meet at the car park at 8.30 to greet him as he drove into work for his final shift.

Friends and former patients also signed a banner draped onto the front of the building.

Tears sprang into some attendees eyes as his car came into view and when he then got out to acknowledge the demonstration of gratitude and affection towards him.

Dr Cooper, a keen sailor, retains a home on the Island and will still spend time on the island in future.

  1. I’m sorry I did not know of this. I would have been there. Thank you Jonathon.
