Alderney Week 2020 has been unveiled – and despite massive hurdles presented by Covid 19 its a lively and entertaining line up.
Among the 68 free events on offer, many of the traditional favourites are there such as Cavalcade on Monday 3rd August, Daft Raft, the Sandcastle Competition, a mini Gala night, Strong Man and Woman the Torchlight Procession and firework spectacular to round off the week. Even the UK-based Alderney Blowers – prevented from coming in person because of isolation requirements – will put an appearance in via video link.
It’s not the only innovative idea that Ronnie Cairnduff and his team of Ilona Soane-Sands, Lee Flewitt, Nigel Vooght, Donald Hughes and Sam Gaudion have come up with to make this year’s Alderney Week happen.
The traditional Miss Alderney disco – where she is traditionally selected and crowned – did take place this year because lockdown intervened. Instead Miss Alderneys from years gone by have been prevailed upon to lead the procession on Cavalcade Day and a Twenties-themed float is being assembled to carry them.
Island Clubs and organisations and Bailiwick bands have stepped up to boost the mix of events on offer, with Alderney Football Club organising a ‘Football Extravaganza’ afternoon at the Arsenal with stalls and competitions, while the Rotary Club has organised a ‘car scramble’ on Tuesday 4th August where teams in cars will be given a list of ‘finds’ to bring back. Prizes will be issued to the most interesting ones.
Mr Cairnduff said he hoped everyone would enjoy this year’s mini Alderney Week.
‘This year’s Alderney Week Team have been beavering away over many weeks in the hope that our dear AW would happen in some shape or form. It may not be as big as in past years, but under the current circumstances we aim for it to being the best FREE entertainment for the Bailiwick Bubble. We look forward to welcoming the good folk from Guernsey, Sark and Herm and even the Isle of Man, many of whom will be here for the first time. Unfortunately, most of our UK visitors, families and our loved ones will not be here this year.
‘With our theme of “The Twenties” we hope everyone will get into the spirit of everything from the Roaring Twenties to the high tech of Twenty/Twenty and everything in between.‘
The Alderney Week 2020 programme is now on sale for £2 at both Alderney newsagents, both LeCocq’s Stores, The Farm Shop, Jean’s Stores and the Visitor Information Centre.
