With several venues open up and down Victoria St on New Years Eve there was quite the parade moving between venues just prior to midnight. I was one of those people. It is not often over the last 10 years I have been on the island over New Years, so i was a little stunned to hear the church bells chiming out.
I could not imagine our bell ringers heading out in the dead of a cold miserable night and then climbing that tiny spiral staircase. But that they did.
I stopped for a time to listen.
Being an antipodean I am not sure if there is some significance to the bells chiming on the lead up to midnight. Or if it was just our bell ringers celebrating in their own way ?
Next year, I will definitely take the time to stop and listen. However, I must remember to bring a pair of gloves to ward off the cold.
